In Rimini , Italy in the year 1227 A.D. a heretic challenged Saint Anthony to prove that Jesus is truly present in the Blessed Sacrament.
The heretic brought a three-day starved mule to a public square along with food to tempt the beast.
The saint demanded silence from the crowd of onlookers.
He then held up the consecrated Host in a monstrance and commanded the hungry mule to adore the Lord of all creation with the following words:
In virtue and in the name of your Creator, Who I, as unworthy as I am, hold in my hands, I tell and order you: Come forward immediately and render homage to the Lord with all due respect so that heretics and evildoers will understand that all creatures must humble themselves before their Creator Whom priests hold in their hands at the altar.
The animal ignored the fodder and bowed its legs and remained still in front of the Holy Sacrament.
The heretic was converted.
